Swim Fit Alaska, LLC

Lessons for advanced swimmer:
Whether you want to be a triathlete, open water swimmer, better lap swimmer, or want to lose a few pounds.
In our training program we will look over your stroke and help you become a more efficient swimmer. We will do this by doing stroke analysis, meaning we will break down your stoke into smaller increments to help you become a much faster and technique conscious swimmer.
We will go over gear fit, pacing, timing, and we will even write workouts for you!

Lessons for the fearful or beginner swimmer:
Do you have a fear of the water? Do you want to get into shape the safest and fastest way possible? Did you never really learn how to swim as a child? Do you have a fear of deep or open water? Don’t Worry! Here at Swim Fit Alaska we are ready and excited to help you. Whether it’s overcoming aqua phobia or just improving your swim techniques, we can help!
In a one-on-one lesson you will learn to relax and begin calm breathing, buoyancy, floating, gliding, and finally stroke techniques. Tense swimmers have a tendency to hold themselves in awkward positions, thereby losing some buoyancy. You will gain complete confidence moving from a horizontal float to a standing position. We will take you step-by-step, slowly and gradually. Our instructors want you to relax and embrace the true healing powers of water, no matter your age or experience level.
A fear of the water for some is very real and can be paralyzing. The stress of just thinking about it can cause a raised heart rate, tense muscles, and accelerated breathing. These are all normal manifestations of water anxiety and can stem from one of the following:

  •   An instinctive fear
  •   Unknown of what is in the water
  •   Bad experience as a child
  •  Transferred from your parent’s fear of the water
  •  Accidental fall into deep water
  •  Inadequate or stressful prior swim lessons
  •  Near drowning experience

Fearful swimmers often keep their bodies rigid and tense in an attempt to keep as much of the head as possible above water. This reaction restricts breathing and makes it difficult to remain buoyant. While other programs are more focused on getting you from one end of the pool to the other, our instructors are more focused on working with you to help overcome your fear, not ignore it. We will make sure that you are safe, relaxed, and comfortable as we progress through our lessons.

Swim Fit Alaska’s mission for our Swim Lesson program is to provide outstanding, convenient and private swimming lessons for Alaskans of all ages with one-on-one quality instruction.

We work with children from ages 3-17 years old.

What will my child learn?

Each class is challenging with activities that motivate children to want to perform and learn to swim.
Different games, toys, and techniques are a few of the strategies our swim school uses to help your child become safer and better swimmers. The one-on-one approach to learning expedites the learning process tremendously. Parents are constantly amazed how quickly a child can progress in our program. Typically a child can learn in one of our half hour sessions, what it takes an entire week in traditional group lessons to achieve.
In our lessons children will learn depending on comfort in the water: Elementary swim skills, water safety, all 4 competitive strokes, and resting strokes.

Safety First
It is important that your child learns to be safe in, on, and around the water, as well as learn to swim well.
We teach them the foundations of water safety so they have the knowledge and skills when they are around or in water. However, it is important to remember that no matter how many lessons your child has there is no substitute for adult supervision.

When you’re raising a child with special needs, learning to swim represents yet another challenge, but one that must be overcome. We hope that with our help students can move past their personal obstacles to learn to swim, improve their confidence, better their fitness, and learn more about water safety.
All autistic children should learn to swim, children with autism are drawn into the water, and rates of drowning are very high. In fact 91% of all wandering deaths for autistic children are because of drowning. We want to change that with our swim lessons for autistic children. Autistic children see, feel and understand things in a different way, which makes teaching them to swim an entirely new challenge. However, our autism swimming instructors have experience with kids on the spectrum, and understand the best techniques to help your child learn to swim and be safe around the water. Of course every child with autism is different, but our instructors have a wide range of experience, and know how to use child-centered methods and flexible teaching to make the special needs swimming lessons work for you. Our talented special needs swim instructors can even provide visual supports, like visual skill cards, to help children on the spectrum to process and understand the swim skills before they practice them.
water is a wonderful addition
For many children with special needs, autism or otherwise, swimming can be a very therapeutic pastime. For autistic children water can be calming on sensory overloads, and in children with physical disabilities the water provides a weightless environment that is often very freeing. Special needs swim lessons unlock the benefits and enjoyment of water for those children, giving them a new lease on life.
